Today I’m finally sharing my (mis)adventures in curating a more organized, minimalist wardrobe! Closet Organization is the bane of most women’s lives. It seems to be the one thing however hard we try, always finds a way to spin feverishly out of control. Without warning. One second it’s organized, clean and happy…the next, clothes are flying and lives are at stake. But alas, there is a light at the end of the tunnel…
Now, since we’re going to be living in our Tiny House in a few months, I will not have the option to have an endless lineup of dresses, jeans and boots. It simply won’t be feasible. J and I’s closet space will be limited, VERY limited. So we’ve slowly been purging our clothes each month and becoming very deliberating with our outfit choices and selective when it comes to purchasing new items. It will essentially be one in, one out. Which is also why I signed up for Rent The Runway’s unlimited subscription.
-The next thing I did was commit myself to the mantra, “quality over quantity”. If I had duplicates of anything I chose the nicer, higher quality of the two and got rid of the other.
-Take everything out! This is the most painful (and somewhat embarrassing) part. If you’re like me you’ll find things that fell on the floor months ago, or old handbags tucked behind long dresses and or lone socks hiding at the back of the dresser. It’s a necessary evil, just get it all out.
-Use matching high, quality hangers. I use these Velvet Hangers from Amazon. Nothing makes a closet look messier than mis-matched hangers. No flimsy plastic or metal. Splurge on some good hangers, your clothes will thank you.
-Find everything a home. If you can’t find a proper home for it, it probably doesn’t need to be in your closet. I’m obsessed with these Foldable Storage Boxes. I use them in every drawer of my dresser to keep my bras, panties, sports bras, socks, slips, workout shirts etc all in there proper place even inside my dresser.
Finally, I inventoried my entire closet. To date I have 304 items in my closet. I created a spreadsheet to help me keep track. Ever hear the ‘we only wear about 20% of our closet’ statistic? Well, I don’t intend on being apart of that statistic anymore. And I find myself cringing when I catch myself saying, ” I have nothing to wear’. Because I do. I officially have 304 things I could wear. But I’ve let society convince me that girls will judge me if they see me in the same thing twice, that shirt is only good for certain occasions and more is more. After creating the spreadsheet and coming to terms with just how many clothes I had collecting dust in my closet, I am so ready for a change. Pun intended. My 304 is after 3 separate edits, btw. Ewe. I have made this Closet Inventory Template available on Google Drive for anyone that wants it. (Simply Copy and Paste it into a new google spreadsheet) Or you can click here to instantly download an excel version.
Stay tuned for more on my Closet Organization and my mission to curate THE perfect wardrobe. Next time I’ll be talking on what I did with all the clothes I got rid of and how I’m developing my personal style.
