I am currently living in my favorite (and only) pair of black shorts. These relaxed boyfriend cutoffs from Gap will be a forever staple in my capsule wardrobe. The thing that makes my minimalist heart the most happy is that these cut-offs only continue to look better over time. It means one less item I have to replace or continuously buy season after season. A pair of black denim cut-offs are truly a timeless staple you can continue to wear for multiple occasions and seasons.
A great pair of black denim shorts will simply never be ‘out of style’
I picked them up last summer and they used to have a longer inseam. I didn’t wear them often because I felt they didn’t hit at the right point on my legs. But I knew they had potential and didn’t want to give up on them. So I decided to just do a little altering – I unrolled the hem and took about 2 inches off and frayed up the edge even more. I now absolutely love how they look and are the most comfortable things. Having something as versatile in your closet as a pair of black shorts is important to keep in mind when building a capsule wardrobe. I love that I can easily take the same pair of shorts from day to night just by swapping out a shirt, strapping on heels and adding a few accessories.
SIMPLE STYLE TIPS FOR BLACK SHORTS
Think About Accessories – Layer on some statement necklaces like this marble one from Madewell, or add a belt. Accessories are such an easy way to instantly change the entire look and feel of an outfit.
Add Some Height – Get out of off those casual flats and throw on a pair of heels. Nothing makes an outfit instantly more dressy than a great pair of heels. I’m currently obsessed with these neutral huarache sandals that are perfect for any laid-back summer outfit.
Don’t Be Afraid To Experiment – The beauty of a classic pair of black cut-off shorts is that they go with literally everything. Try tucking in your favorite t-shirt or slipping on silky black cami for a more sexy date night look.
Rinse & Repeat – I used to dread having to wear the same outfit twice, but now I embrace it! By re-wearing outfits you feel comfortable and confident in is not only a more efficient way of getting dressed in the morning but it helps to define your personal style. When you only have 40-ish pieces in your closet you learn quickly what outfits are your ‘go-to’s’. These looks are definitely two of mine.
SHOP BLACK SHORTS
While I believe that anyone can pull off a pair of black shorts, maybe black shorts just aren’t your thing. That’s OK! Maybe you keep going back to your favorite pencil skirt or tailored chinos. Whatever works best for you, embrace it and just go with it. The point is to stock your closet with essential pieces that form a strong anchor to quickly and effortlessly pull together a wide range of outfits for every type of occassion.
