It’s really difficult to live a totally balanced life. One of the best ways to restore balance and inner peace is a good vacation. For the past three years, we’ve escaped to Breckenridge, Colorado. Always around January or February. It’s a slower time of year and gives us the opportunity to regroup and re-energize.
It is quite simply: Our Happy Place.
See, look how happy we are. Those are some genuine, loving life smiles right there! (and a bit sleepy because we had been boarding for three days) but even being exhausted, we are happy. I don’t know if I can say enough good things about Breckenridge. To me, it’s somewhat of a magical place.
It’s nestled down in a little valley at the base of the Tenmile Mountain Range and is home to a population of just over 4,600. The buildings, the lights, the red ribbons tied on alternating lamp posts make you feel like you’ve stepped into some winter wonderland storybook. This year the snowfall wasn’t nearly as much as in other years. One year the snowbank on the streets was up to our waists. Needless to say it only added to it’s charm. It gets dark so early and places close up shop by 9 most nights. And try as we might, we couldn’t stay up past 10pm. As crazy night owls, this is not easy for us to do.
Happiness is a good night sleep.
A few years back I found some salmon jerky in this little wagon on the corner. It was amazing. I ate all of it on the plane ride home (if you really want to be that ‘obnoxious food eater’ on a plane: Eat salmon jerky. It’s delicious, but it stinks.) I find this wagon and get some every year. You can buy it online, but I refuse. It makes me happier to purchase it out of this wagon on a snowy street corner once a year.
Happiness is making memories.
After three days of boarding, eating too much amazing food at places like Hearthstone and The Blue Moose (cash only), relaxing in the hot tub at the base of peak 7. . . we decided to slowly meander our way down the mountain back towards real life. (NoooOOOooo!)
We absolutely love our friends at Silvercar. There is no better car rental out there. When you vacation in Breckenridge, you get a Silvercar. And by Silvercar, I mean a silver Audi A4. It’s the only model they rent. If you travel frequently, I would highly suggest looking into the airports they service. You won’t find a better car rental experience anywhere.
Happiness is experiencing quality.
As we were driving we took our time. We weren’t in a rush. And that feeling felt amazing. It seems like our lives are in this constant ‘boost’ mode. So to be able to get lost on an adventure felt absolutely amazing.
Seriously, we did get lost. I wanted to try and see some buffalo. So we traveled up to where the ‘buffalo lookout’ was. There was no lookout and there was no buffalo. But I wasn’t even mad. The drive was so beautiful. I tried my hardest to snap some shots but in the end I just put my camera away so I could just be in the moment and enjoy the present.
Happiness is taking joy in the journey.
We always look forward to our annual vacation in Breckenridge. Coming back to work and reality was bittersweet. Our work and projects are the priorities right now. There are so many things we want to accomplish in the next few years. But having a getaway like this we can always look forward to brings me so much happiness. That it makes all the work the rest of the year worth it.
